Open Water Diver

Do you have a sense of adventure? Do you love to explore? Do you dream of seeing things many others never will? Then let diving quench your sense of adventure…

Here at Dive Spear and Sport, we offer a dive course for the next generation. Learning to dive, we want you to ACTUALLY learn to dive underwater, not just learn how to survive underwater. You should leave your course buzzing to get into the water again – and why wouldn’t you? The water is an amazing ecosystem that needs to be experienced in it all its glory – under the surface!

Experience the beauty of coral reefs, dive with sharks, navigate through caves or experience true history underwater on some of the world’s wrecks. No matter what you want to do, this is where your journey starts and Dive Spear and Sport will help you get there with an Open Water Course!

What you’ll learn.

On your open water course, you will be primarily taught the skills required to dive to 18m (12m for under 15 years of age). You will learn about:

  • The aquatic environment you are diving in.
  • You will learn physics and physiology – understanding buoyancy, pressure, air spaces, breathing compressed air.
  • You will learn about assembling, using and maintaining a dive kit.
  • Basic skills including mask and regulator skills, swimming underwater, controlling buoyancy, basic rescue techniques and emergency procedures.
  • To have fun and ENJOY your diving!

Why choose Dive Spear and Sport for this course

  • Unlike most other operators, your open water dives will be OFF A BOAT. That means no lugging your heavy gear down to the water, no stumbling around trying to put mask and fins on, and better sites without messy entry or other divers, swimmers or snorkelers on it.
  • Learn Boat Diving Skills. We will also teach you skills and allow you to practice them off a boat. For most people, especially holiday divers, most diving will be off a boat – so you learn the skills early.
  • We care about making you good divers. Some of the most common feedback we get from our divers is that we care about creating good divers. You are not just a number to us. We want you to enjoy your diving AND, we want others to enjoy diving with you. That means we give you constant encouragement and feedback, because we want you to become a diver, not just “take your money”.

How it works

E-Learning: Prior to commencing the course, you will be required to complete an E-learning component. This component will take about 6-10 hours depending on how fast you learn. This will be done online and must be completed before commencing your practical components.

Course Day 1: 8am – 4pm or 5pm til late – Pool

The first day will start with a quick revision of your theory, followed by skills in the pool. At this time, you will be equipped with your diving gear for the next three days.

Course Day 2: 8am – 4pm – Ocean dives 1 & 2

Dives one and two will be conducted from the Dive, Spear and Sport boat. The dives will be decided on the week of the course depending on conditions.

Course Day 3: 8am – 4pm – Ocean dives 3 & 4
